There once lived a girl
So tiny and blue.
She had tiny eyes
And a tiny voice too.
She would walk through the streets
With her neck stretched high
As the concrete of the jungle
And the giants passed her by.
The big world loomed above her
And she cowered down below
While dreaming of the places
That she would in future go.
One day she made her mind up
To tackle the unknown,
And embark upon a journey
That would leave her fully-grown.
And though she feared the giants
And being hurt once more,
She tied her tiny laces
And headed out the door.
Her first stop offered greenery
That swished and swayed around her;
She stood in foreign tubes
And allowed them to transport her.
The tiny girl saw rivers
And buildings of all heights;
She danced alongside strangers
In pulsating disco lights.
She used her voice to navigate
The land she did not know,
And with each new encounter,
Her voice began to grow.
Her next stop was a path
Through ancient brick and stone;
Foreign bridges and canals,
And language too unknown.
At the colour of the houses
Her tiny eyes felt vigour,
And as they blinked about,
Her tiny eyes grew bigger.
The tiny traveller soon found herself
Buried deep in brown:
Ruins, bricks and paths of sand
Encased her all around.
She heard of ancient tales
And explored their birthplace, too.
With each new spoken story,
Her curiosity grew.
The destination to follow
Was one to which she flew.
She lay beneath the palm trees
Along the ocean blue.
These days were not her best
As obstacles fell in her way,
But her strong mind only grew
The more she fought to stay.
Some more sand followed
With oceans crystal clear.
Sea caves, kayaks and pirate ships
And midnight swims with beer.
Some nights she can’t remember
But will surely never forget;
The gashes on her back
That she could never regret.
Her voice began to scratch
And her chest began to ache,
Yet all the while her tiny body
Was now too big to break.
The tiny traveller found herself
In a concrete jungle of hills,
Where natural disasters had occurred
But life did not stand still.
Elevators and cable trams
And drunken rendezvous;
The tiny traveller could not leave
Without a new tattoo.
Next she flew through clouds
To a land that spoke her tongue.
Reunited with friends and family,
She laughed and danced and sang.
And in this foreign country
Little did she know
That a foreign special someone
Would cause her heart to grow.
The tiny traveller embarked
On her lengthy journey home
With a very heavy heart
And a newfound fear of the known.
But her eyes began to widen
As she walked familiar roads,
For she towered far above
The buildings that she had once known.
There once lived a girl
So tiny and blue.
She had tiny eyes
And a tiny voice too.
She would walk through the streets
With her neck stretched high
As the concrete of the jungle
And the giants passed her by.
She no longer fears the giants
Nor being hurt once more.
She now ties her lengthy laces
And heads straight out the door.
